CMGA OPENING DAY CARTHAGE
MEN'S ASSOCIATION 2005 EVENTS CONTACT CARTHAGE GOLF CLUB Pro Shop (417) 237-7030 - email Mark Peterson at mpeterson@ecarthage.com #1 Number one is a fantastic opening hole. At 402 yards, this hole has a tree lined, narrow fairway with emphasis put on a straight drive. Once in the fairway the approach is fairly routine into the only green on the course without a green-side bunker. #2 Number two is a dogleg left with trouble laying in the trees to the left. At 374 yards this hole gives the longest hitters the risk reward opportunity to try to cut the corner and reach the green (not advised). #3 Number three is the shortest of our par threes at 137 yards. Proper club selection is the only trick to this hole with wind and pin locations hard to detect. #4 Number four is the second shortest par four on the course. A strategically placed bunker accentuates the left to right dogleg and the fairway needs to be hit. This green has two tiers and an approach in the wrong spot spells three putt. #5 Number five is a superb hole. Converted from a short par 5, this hole stretches to 412 yards and is challenging from tee to green. A fairway bunker needs to be avoided and the green has three tiers with bunkers and a lake surrounding it. #6 At 140 yards, this hole is not very long, but the tee shot is intimidating for the shot is all carry over Catron Lake. #7 Number seven is the first par 5 that you will encounter. There is tree trouble left off the tee and the longer hitters have an opportunity to go for this green in two. The approach into the green is guarded by two large bunkers and need to be avoided. #8 Number eight is the longest par three on the course at 208 yards. The green is very undulated and guarded by a left front bunker. This green is hard to hit and will test the best players short game. #9 Number nine is a 511 yard par 5. Precision off of this tee is mandatory for success. The opening shot comes through a tree lined chute and two nasty fairway bunkers await any mishaps. The second shot deals with a dogleg right and the tee shot dictates how much you can bite off.
#10 Number ten is another good par 5 of 509 yards. Recently renovated, the tee shot and second shot give a glimpse of a large creek. A fairway bunker and green-side bunker make the 2nd and 3rd shot more difficult than the distance portrays. #11 Number eleven is easily the hardest and most challenging hole Carthage has to offer. This hole produces the highest stroke average in all of our tournaments. A 456 yard par 4, from tee to green, there is very little room for error and birdie here earns you a trophy ball on Tiger Woods 2004. #12 Number twelve is a medium range par 3 of 192 yards. The uniquely shaped green and mounding make for a difficult tee shot. Pin location can turn this innocent looking hole into a quick bogey or worse. #13 Number thirteen is beautiful by design. The last of the par 5s, this hole stretches out to 527 yards. The tee shot tempts the longest hitters into trying to carry the hazard. The lay-up is the best option, but a large lake hugs the left side of the fairway. The fairway narrows as your lay-up option increases. Once the hazard is managed, the approach is into a green that runs diagonally away from the player and makes carry distance hard to manage. #14 Number fourteen rates as the second most difficult hole on the course. This 418 yard par 4 starts off with a demanding tee shot that must stay clear of a fairway bunker on the right. The approach is into the narrowest green on the course and has a steep false front. The slightest off line shot will result in a difficult up and down. #15 Number fifteen is a dogleg left 387 yard par 4. The hole narrows at the turn and the green sets into a slight slope with favorable mounding. Tightest landing area on the course. Lay-up short of fairway bunker gives the best opportunity. #16 Number 16 is our shortest par 4. It is the last chance for the long hitter to make a mistake. A mid to large iron off the tee will set up the best approach into this undulated green. #17 Number seventeen is the last part three for the day and is 165 yards in length. The trick to this hole is to choose the right club because all 165 yards are downhill and you can not afford to go long.
#18 Number 18 is a wonderful finishing hole of 371 yards. The fairway tightens up after the fairway bunker on the right. The green is tucked to the left behind mature oak trees. Once on this green, no two putt is safe with the tricky undulation changes. STORY
